NASA Teams Up with University for a Unique Mission – La Nouvelle Tribune

At a time when the search for space is increasingly turning to our natural satellite, Moon, Oxford Universityin collaboration with NASAis about to fulfill a unique and revolutionary mission. Their purpose? Explore in detail the composition of the lunar surface and, above all, the tracking of water – a critical element of future human missions. At the heart of this mission is Lunar Thermal Mapper (DV) from Oxford University. Thanks to satellite, this advanced tool is designed to map the temperature of the lunar surface, ranging from -163°C to 127°C.

In addition, thanks to its specialized infrared channels, LTM will also be able to detect small changes in the composition of the silicate minerals that make up the Moon. This valuable data can tell us where to find water, a vital element for sustaining life and future space travel. But the quest doesn’t stop at LTM. Spaceship Lunar Pathfinderon which the LTM is mounted is also equipped with the high-resolution Volatiles and Minerals (HVM3) lunar mapper.

Designed to measure the spectral characteristics of the lunar landscape, this instrument will work in conjunction with the LTM to determine the shape, abundance and location of water on the Moon. Together, these instruments could not only confirm the presence of water, but also help us understand how it is transported and stored on the lunar surface.

Libby Jackson, Head of Space Research at the UK Space Agency, says the mission is part of a broader priority to support initiatives that pave the way for new adventures in space. The Lunar Trailblazer mission scheduled for 2024 promises an exciting future in lunar exploration. And for the University of Oxford, this is further proof of its commitment to scientific advances that shape our understanding of the universe.
