Samsung announces the global launch of Samsung Food, a personalized, AI-powered food and recipe service

This new service combines personalized recipes, meal planning intelligence and smart home compatibility

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced the launch of Samsung Food, an AI-powered personalized food and recipe platform.

Deployed in eight languages[1] In 104 countries around the world, Samsung Food will offer complete dining experiences with more than 160,000 recipes, acting as a personal assistant to help users discover new dishes, plan tailor-made meals and order ingredients personally. The service will also help users control their kitchen appliances, provide step-by-step cooking instructions and allow users to share their favorite recipes on social media.

Building on the foundation of Samsung’s broad range of kitchen and foodservice equipment, Samsung uses Food AI to go beyond current capabilities and deliver a food platform that truly adapts to the needs and lifestyles of its users. To do this, Samsung Food uses the very extensive database of Whisk, a smart food platform acquired by Samsung Next in 2019 that uses advanced technology called Food AI, which suggests meals based on customer preferences, users and food seasons.

“The food we love and the way we prepare it is central to our daily lives and we all love to cook and eat together,” he says Chanwoo Park, Executive Vice President and Head of the Digital Home Appliances Service Group at Samsung Electronics. By connecting digital home appliances and mobile devices to the Samsung ecosystem and helping users from the shopping list to the moment of consuming the meal, Samsung Food uses advanced AI features to provide a highly personalized and centralized meal experience that users at their fingertips.

Eat your way: recipe exploration and customization, AI-enhanced meal planning, kitchen connectivity, and social media sharing

Samsung Food’s wide range of features support users every step of the way during meal planning and food preparation in four key areas: recipe discovery and customization, customized meal planning, connected cooking and social media sharing.

For recipe discovery, Samsung Food allows users to save recipes to their personal digital recipe box anytime, anywhere. The app analyzes recipes, standardizes their format and organizes them to create shopping lists based on their ingredients. In addition to mobile devices, users can also access Samsung Food service with their Bespoke Family Hub™ refrigerators[2]. The Samsung Food app is accessed via the Family Hub™ touchscreen and provides recipe recommendations based on a user-curated list of available ingredients.[3]

Samsung Food also comes with a custom recipe feature, which allows the app’s Food AI engine to directly adjust a saved recipe to better reflect the user’s dietary restrictions. For example, users can convert a recipe to a vegan or vegetarian version or make other changes to create a recipe that is more nutritionally balanced and contains available ingredients. Users can even create recipe fusions, such as Korean versions of Italian dishes, and adjust the cooking time or skill level required for the recipes.

To create personalized daily meal plans, the app provides AI-generated recommendations based on user data[4], their food preferences and favorite types of cuisine, and then lets the user add these suggestions to their meal calendar. Nutritional data of ingredients is available at all times and users can add items to their Samsung Food shopping list and then send them directly to a retailer’s e-commerce service to complete their order[5].

With Connected Kitchen, users can set timers and preheat ovens thanks to Samsung Food’s seamless connectivity[6] and send recipe cooking settings directly to their devices[7] through step-by-step guided cooking modes, all from their mobile devices. Starting with the Bespoke oven, Samsung plans to connect many appliances to Samsung Food before the end of the year, including Bespoke induction cooktops and Bespoke microwave ovens, to make cooking easier for users.

Users can easily socialize with Samsung Food by sharing their favorite dishes with their community, creating and posting their own recipes, and following their favorite food content creators.

From Samsung Health integration to Vision AI: upcoming features for Samsung Food

In addition to the Samsung Food capabilities available at launch, Samsung will continue to add new features and services to the app to create an even simpler and more comprehensive personal dining experience.

Samsung plans to offer Samsung Health integration with Samsung Food before the end of the year, allowing users to receive diet management suggestions. By easily syncing information such as BMI, body composition and calorie consumption with Samsung Food, users can achieve their health goals and eat a balanced diet.

Expected to be rolled out in 2024, the Vision AI technology will enable Samsung Food to recognize ingredients and meals photographed by the camera and provide details about them, including nutritional information. By analyzing foods, the app can recommend the best recipes to use them in, save these recipes to the user’s collection, and add the necessary ingredients to a shopping list, all with the touch of a few buttons.

Samsung Food, the latest addition to Samsung’s ever-expanding family of services, represents the next step in Samsung’s portfolio of comprehensive, yet highly personalized experiences for Samsung customers to enjoy at home. Samsung Food aims to make life even easier with a smart kitchen consisting of Samsung home appliances and will be continuously updated with new features after the official launch.
