Suicides to hit record high in 2022

The number of suicide deaths in the United States will reach a record high in 2022, according to data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

According to the same source, 49,449 people died by suicide in the United States last year, an increase of 2.6% compared to the 48,183 deaths recorded in 2021.

Suicide trends, which have declined among the young, have increased among the elderly. Deaths by suicide among people aged 10 to 24 decreased by 8.4%, to 6,529 in 2022 compared to 7,126 in 2021. The trend is reversed for other age groups.

The number of suicide deaths among people aged 25 to 44 increased by 0.7%, from 16,724 in 2021 to 16,843 in 2022, while suicides among people aged 45 to 64 increased by 6.6%, from 14,668 to 15,632 years.6 For 2 persons a. and more, suicide deaths increased by 8.1%, from 9,652 in 2021 to 10,433 in 2022.

The American Indian/Alaska Native suicide rate also decreased in 2022. Suicide deaths decreased by 6.1%, from 692 people in 2021 to 650 people in 2022. The male suicide rate increased by 2.3%, from 38,358 deaths in 2021.,25. deaths in 2022, while the number of women increased by 3.8%, from 9,825 deaths in 2021 to 10,194 deaths in 2022.

Despite the rise in these deaths, experts say increasing resources and promoting awareness of mental health issues offer some hope. A new national crisis line was launched a year ago so people can get help from mental health professionals.
