Asthma is a chronic, debilitating disease that occurs in attacks during which patients experience difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness. This is the most common chronic disease among children. In France, 11% of children and 6% of adults suffer from asthma.

There are treatments that can limit asthma symptoms but do not cure asthma. Therefore, identifying the causes of asthma is especially important to prevent asthma from developing or progressing to serious forms. It has now been established that, in addition to genetics, environmental influences play an important role in the development and progression of asthma.

However, research continues to better define the role of many proven or suspected environmental factors in the development of asthma to guide prevention efforts. Valérie Sirou, an epidemiologist at Inserm, will present the latest research in respiratory epidemiology to better understand the determinants of asthma and its progression.

Speaker: Dr. Valerie Sirou, researcher at INSERM, Institute for the Development of Biosciences (La Tronche), Inserm, University of Grenoble-Alpes, CNRS.
