ASUS ROG introduces a monitor with image compression technology

ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) today unveiled a new 43-inch gaming monitor, the world’s first with Display Stream Compression (DSC), at the AMD Next Horizon Gaming event at E3 2019. Display Stream Compression is an industry-wide technology. a compression standard for transmitting ultra-high definition video streams over a single interface at high speed without noticeable loss of image quality.

Using DSC technology, the new ROG Monitor can display incredibly detailed and smooth images at native 4K resolution and 144Hz refresh rate over a single DisplayPort 1.4 connection without chroma subsampling, which can negatively impact image quality.

Previously, to achieve this level of performance, gaming monitors required two DisplayPort connections to carry the video signal from the PC, which also often required complex driver setup and prevented the display of high dynamic range (HDR) content, but the new ROG Monitor eliminates these issues. Issues supporting both HDR and variable refresh rate over a single DisplayPort 1.4 connection.

The new ROG Monitor delivers an immersive 43-inch large screen experience without sacrificing the ultra-fast and variable refresh rates typically only found on smaller panels. AMD Radeon FreeSync™ 2 HDR technology synchronizes monitor output with GPU frame rates for smooth, lag-free gaming, while optimized input lag gives competitive gamers a big edge in time-sensitive battles.

HDR support expands the contrast range and delivers deeper blacks and brighter whites for richer, deeper images than traditional SDR. The new ROG monitor meets the VESA DisplayHDR 1000 specification with 10-bit image processing and a maximum brightness of 1000 cd/m². Local dimming plays a vital role in meeting VESA black level requirements, and the 90 percent DCI-P3 gamut coverage quantifies the display’s color advantage.
