Beijing protests against US sanctions

Beijing has voiced strong opposition to US sanctions targeting Chinese companies and individuals that the US Treasury Department says are linked to Iran’s development of drones and military aircraft.

“The United States should immediately stop its unreasonable repression of Chinese companies and people,” a Commerce Ministry spokesman told state broadcaster CCTV on September 26.

“The United States has included some Chinese companies and individuals on the list of specially designated nationals because of the so-called development of drones and military aircraft involving Iran, which China strongly opposes,” he explained.

Washington last week imposed sanctions on “seven individuals and four entities” based in Iran, China, Russia and Turkey, saying they facilitated shipments and financial transactions linked to Iran’s military program.

The United States accuses Iran of supplying Russia with drones used by Moscow in Ukraine and regularly used in Syria. A charge contested by the first parties. “China will take necessary measures to firmly protect its legitimate rights and interests,” the spokesman said. Drones have become a central part of the military strategy of Russia and Iran, both targeted by Western powers.
