The James Webb Telescope has discovered a planet that could be covered in water.

In a solar system other than ours, NASA’s James Webb Telescope was able to observe a planet that could provide promising characteristics for the search for extraterrestrial life. The information is reported by The Guardian. In its atmosphere, scientists from the University of Cambridge were able to detect water vapor and chemical signatures of methane and carbon dioxide.

These clues indicate that this planet, located nearly 70 light-years from our Earth, may be the planet of Haysa. In other words, its surface will consist of a deep ocean and have an atmosphere rich in hydrogen. However, researchers are skeptical that it meets all the conditions to support life. “Ocean temperatures may exceed 100°C or more.“explains Professor Nikku Madhusudhan from the University of Cambridge.

Temperature too high?

However, Canadian researchers do not completely agree with the hypothesis of English researchers. “In our opinion, the temperature is too high for the water to be liquid.” states Professor Bjorn Benneke from the University of Montreal, based on the excessive amount of water vapor. The professor believes that the temperature on this planet can reach 4000°C. Heat that causes water to become supercritical, which looks like this:almost like a thick warm liquid

Opinions therefore differ given the early level of research that must be in depth to determine whether life is possible on this planet.
