After measles, a case of tuberculosis was detected in the region

Without saying more about the city of origin or places visited by the infected person, the government body confirms that an investigation is underway to identify people with whom they have been in contact and who are considered at risk.

“A thorough epidemiological investigation was carried out yesterday (Wednesday) to quickly identify these at-risk people who are being referred for medical assessment of their condition,” points out Laurence Chartrand, CIUSSS MCQ Information Director. “Since there is only one case, we cannot talk about an outbreak,” she adds.

Infectious disease caused by a microbe Mycobacterium tuberculosisTuberculosis can develop quickly after first exposure to the microorganism or appear several years later. Therefore, it takes two forms: latent and active.

In the latent state, an infected person has no symptoms, is not contagious, and can be treated with antibiotics to prevent future reactivation of the disease. According to the Quebec government, in 90% of cases the infection will remain latent.

When active, TB most often develops in the lungs, although it can also affect other organs, such as the lymph nodes, kidneys, or bones.

In the pulmonary form, the main symptoms of the disease are a cough lasting more than three weeks, often accompanied by sputum, fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, night sweats and weight loss.

Stable measles situation

As for the measles outbreak declared in early March, the region remains stable with fewer than five cases reported. However, CIUSSS MCQ remains vigilant and continues its efforts to vaccinate young people.

“Since February 25, 1,600 doses of measles vaccine have been administered in the region. The measles vaccine is the best way to protect against this disease,” explains Laurence Chartrand.

However, the number of cases continues to rise across the country, although it will be more than three times higher than those reported in 2023.
