Bridge collapses in Baltimore: Two bodies found

The bodies of two people were found in the Patapsco River where a bridge collapsed in the city of Baltimore (East), local authorities announced Wednesday.

These are two of the six workers who disappeared after the collapse of the bridge, the same sources added.

The two bodies, which were recovered by divers, were found in the fully submerged van, said Roland L. Butler Jr. of the Maryland State Police.

They are two workers from Mexico and Guatemala, the authorities said.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge, one of the busiest in this Maryland city, collapsed after being hit by a container ship around 1:30 a.m. (HL) Tuesday morning. Eight people fell into the Patapsco River after the crash, two of whom were rescued Tuesday.

The Coast Guard said Tuesday night that all six missing people are presumed dead.

We do not expect to find any of these individuals alive yet.Vice Admiral Shannon Gilreath said during a press conference.

The container ship, traveling at a relatively fast speed of about eight knots, lost power moments before it struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said.

Before the collision, the crew of the container ship alerted the authorities with an SOS signal that allowed the authorities to stop the traffic before the collision and probably saved lives, the governor added.

Port of Baltimore is at a standstill after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The accident, which disrupted the flow of ships in and out of Baltimore, could hurt the local economy, strain supply chains and disrupt shipments along the US East Coast, analysts said.
