In the United States, most disapprove of Israel’s action in Gaza

After mixed support for Israel’s military intervention in Gaza in November, Americans are now expressing broad opposition to it. Currently, 55% disapprove of Israel’s actions, compared to 36% who approve, according to the US-based Gallup website.

Conducted from March 1 to 20, the recent Gallup survey reveals significantly different results compared to those of November 2023. Indeed, the poll revealed a significant gap, with 55% of respondents disapproving of the actions of the Israeli armed forces, while this number rose to 45 % in the previous survey, which is a jump of 10 points.

At the same time, US citizens’ approval of Israel’s actions during the conflict has fallen significantly, from 50% in November, a month after hostilities in Gaza began, to 36% in March, while the percentage of Americans who say they have “no opinion” on the issue it increased from 4% to 9% in the same period.

Moreover, the three major political parties in the United States have significantly revised their position regarding these Israeli actions, showing less support than last November. This change is characterized by a drop of 18 percentage points in the ratings among Democrats and independents, while among Republicans there is a drop of 7 points.

Gallup notes that they are radically independent changed perspective, moving from a common position on Israeli military intervention to a determined opposition. Democrats, already largely opposed in November, are even more opposed today, with just 18% approving compared to 75% disapproving. Republicans, for their part, remain supportive Israeli military actions, but the share of those who approved decreased from 71% to 64%.

This growing discontent, evident not only in the United States but also in several other countries, is largely the result of continued Israeli military operations that have left Gaza in ruins and caused tens of thousands of deaths since the conflict began on October 7 last.

A recent report by the Palestinian Ministry of Health reported at least 32,333 deaths, including 13,750 children and 3,250 women, while nearly 74,694 people were injured, including 12,300 children. Tens of thousands of them have disappeared, and the toll is growing alarmingly every day.

Furthermore, according to the latest estimates published by UNICEF, 2.2 million people in the Gaza Strip need humanitarian aid, one million children are affected by this war, 90% of the population is in a situation of acute food insecurity, while 2 out of 3 hospitals no longer function.
