Israeli bombing continues as population faces “imminent starvation” – Telquel.ma

LThe Hamas Health Ministry reported this morning “dozens of dead” during the fighting and airstrikes, especially in Rafah (south), a city that Israel considers the last major bastion of Hamas and home to 1.5 million Palestinians, the vast majority were displaced by the hostilities. In addition to the human toll and destruction, the war has caused a humanitarian disaster in the besieged Palestinian territory, where most of the 2.4 million people are now at risk of starvation according to the UN, which laments the largely insufficient aid to meet the population’s needs.

“There is no other place in the world where so many people face inevitable hunger”complained on Thursday to X Matthew Hollingworth, responsible for the Palestinian territories at PAM.

Israel must “watch without delay” to ensure that “unlimited and massive provision of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian aid by all interested parties”the International Court of Justice (ICJ) based in The Hague announced on Thursday.

Seized by South Africa, the court in January ordered Israel to do everything possible to prevent a “genocide” in the Palestinian territory, Israel considers such accusations “scandalous”. During the night, Hamas welcomed the ICJ decision and requested it “immediate implementation”.

Faced with a humanitarian emergency, several countries are organizing aid releases and expeditions by sea, but all stress that these supply routes cannot replace land routes.

The Israeli military, which accuses Hamas fighters of hiding in hospitals, said on Friday it was continuing its operations in the al-Chifa hospital complex in northern Gaza City, saying “eliminated about 200 terrorists” in the sector from March 18. She emphasized insurance “prevent any harm to civilians, patients, medical teams and equipment”.

In the central Gaza Strip, the military said it did “destroyed numerous rockets intended to be fired at Israel”and eliminated “terrorists”.

Operations continue in Khan Younes, in the south of the Gaza Strip, in the areas of Al-Amal and Al Qarara, where, according to her, Palestinian fighters were also killed.

In Khan Younes, several injured people were taken by ambulance to a European hospital overnight, according to AFP images. Some victims, including children, were treated on the ground. In Rafa, further south, dozens of men were working to clear the rubble of a bombed-out building of wounded and bodies, from which a boy had been removed.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday confirmed his determination to launch a ground offensive against Rafah despite international pressure, including from the United States.

“We hold the north of the Gaza Strip, as well as Khan Younes (south). We have cut the Gaza Strip in two and we are preparing to enter Rafah”he said.

The United States, Israel’s main ally who fears human casualties from such an operation, recently requested an Israeli delegation be sent to Washington to discuss the project.

At the same time, Qatar – a mediator with Egypt and the United States – this week hosted indirect talks between Israel and Hamas on a proposed truce lasting several weeks with an exchange of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners.

The UN resolution calling for a “immediate ceasefire” it was adopted on Monday after the United States abstained, but “Nothing has changed” since then in the field, lamented the International President of Doctors Without Borders Christos Christou.
