Such a move would also give the US president the power to designate other apps as national security threats if they are controlled by a country deemed hostile to Washington.

Many US officials argue that the short, entertaining video platform allows Beijing to spy on and manipulate its 170 million users in the United States. Joe Biden repeated his “care” about TikTok during an exchange with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in early April.

The House of Representatives already adopted a text in mid-March that foresees a ban on applications, but the text has remained in parliamentary limbo ever since.
