“The sun is a ticking time bomb”: why prevention is important to avoid skin cancer

This RTL Bienvenue information is dedicated to a very common type of cancer: skin cancer, 2 days before the big closing evening at Télévie. Bernadette Bloir, a dermatologist from Namur, will talk about this.

Skin cancer is a common cancer, more common than before. Generally speaking, melanoma is best known because it is the most dangerous: “This is a skin tumor that metastasizes very quickly. The earlier a diagnosis is made, the better we can support the patient.“,” points out dermatologist Bernadette Bloir. “But there are other forms of skin cancer: “There are two main ones: basal cell carcinoma, which is the most common. This is the least dangerous type of cancer because it does not metastasize and is not life-threatening. Another option is squamous cell carcinoma. It is less dangerous than melanoma and most often occurs in older people.“, the specialist adds.

More frequent diagnoses

This type of cancer is being diagnosed more and more often. For Bernadette Bloir this is not only negative: “If we diagnose many of them, it is because people seek advice. The sooner people come, the better we will treat them.“. But there is an important nuance here: “This also means that people are exposed to too much sun. And the sun is a ticking time bomb“.

Fortunately, skin cancer is increasingly treatable. Thanks in part to Télévie, the research was able to be funded and therefore continued: “We have more effective preventatives, such as sunscreens, which are much better quality than before. On a treatment level, immunotherapy has also helped a lot. These treatments, which are more specific than chemotherapy for cancer cells, provide better results in terms of cure.“.

In the future, the specialist wants to improve the prevention of this cancer and, in particular, the risks associated with sun exposure.
