innovation that can beat cancer

How does this decision differentiate us from other oncology institutions? Radiotheranostics is one of the most important achievements in oncology in recent years. Professor Patrick Flamin, Head of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the Jules Bordet Institute and Director of the Center of Excellence in Radiotheranostics, recalls: “Personalized oncology is constantly evolving. We have been practicing nuclear medicine for several years, specializing in molecular imaging techniques (PET/CT and SPECT/CT). Radiotheranostics, a combination of diagnostics (molecular) and therapy (radionuclide), represents a new generation of therapeutic methods. Today in Belgium very few of us offer this type of innovative treatment. »

For some resistant patients

This treatment has proven useful for patients with prostate cancer or unresectable metastatic neuroendocrine tumor that is refractory to chemotherapy and hormonal therapy. This treatment increases overall survival and quality of life of patients, as demonstrated in randomized phase III trials in which the Jules Bordet Institute participated.

5 slightly unusual rooms

Since the publication of these results, the world of nuclear medicine has been in turmoil (a perfect storm) and transformation. “With this new technology for our patients, not only are clinicians forced to refocus, but nuclear medicine services must benefit from significant investment to be able to deliver radioactive treatments in a safe and secure environment.

The construction of the new Bordet building became an opportunity to implement all the necessary infrastructure and technology in the hospital itself. This was made possible thanks to a donation from the Jules Bordet Association. »

Other investments were also made, such as the creation of specialized radiopharmaceuticals (GMP quality), as well as the construction of 5 wards adapted to hospitalize patients in isolation (often less than 24 hours).

This work is carried out in a multidisciplinary team and requires close interaction between doctors of different specialties, radiophysicists, radiopharmaceuticals and technologists specializing in nuclear medicine.
