The small town of Oyonnax is better known for rugby than athletics. However, eyes could soon be turned away from the oval ball. According to Le Progrès, the Frenchman Kevin Mayer will again try to achieve the minimum requirements for the Olympics in this city of Ain, which will organize the French elite combined tournament championship on 18 and 19 May. The co-president of USO Athletics Haut-Bugey says he “Confident” upon the arrival of the decathlon.

Repeated physical errors

Three months before the Olympic Games, Kevin Mayer, a leading figure in French athletics, is not yet eligible. He must achieve a minimum of 8,460 points to get his ticket. The Frenchman, a victim of repeated injuries, has not been able to complete a decathlon since his world crown in Eugene (USA) in 2022.

Despite this scenario, Mayer always remained confident. He is also used to minimum requirements late in life. In 2012, he did them a month before the start of the London Games. Four years later, he validated his qualification in May.
