Facebook opens up its operating system to other headset brands

This discovery will allow manufacturers such as Asus and Lenovo to develop new devices for users.

“A new step in our vision of a more open computing platform for the metaverse.” Mark Zuckerberg’s team continues to focus on this universe of virtual worlds, despite cutting its dedicated workforce last October. On Monday, April 22, the company announced in a blog post that it is opening up the operating system of its Meta Quest devices to third-party manufacturers.

Meta Horizon OS, the mixed reality operating system used in Meta Quest, will be the foundation of this new ecosystem. It “combines the core technologies that power today’s mixed reality environments with a set of features that puts social presence at the center of the platform,” Mehta said. These technologies include eye, face, hand and body tracking.

New ecosystem for manufacturers and developers

With this discovery, Meta will allow companies to develop new devices based on the Meta Horizon OS. For example, Asus is working on an “all-new high-performance gaming headset” as part of its ROG line. Lenovo will also develop mixed reality devices to enhance productivity, learning and entertainment. Finally, Xbox is teaming up with Meta once again to create a limited edition of Meta Quest.

This openness also allows the company to offer a broader ecosystem to developers. In particular, this will allow them to adapt their mobile applications to the Meta Horizon OS so that they can create mixed reality applications.
