The way to practice fencing was not the most formal, but the approach initiated by the two sports clubs – the school of the Salies-du-Salat golf club and the Saint-Gaudens fencing club – was not either!
This exchange was set up during the Easter holidays, over a full day with the fencing club and its fencing champion Sébastien Fourgeaud and golf pro from Salies-du-Salat, Matthieu Rodellar. “The idea that I want to implement at the start of the next school year with Inès Pantoli, also a golf instructor at the club,” explains the teacher, “is that we can do exchanges like this for every school holiday – be it judo, climbing, canoeing… The principle is that it each time there is a state certified professional instructor to guide the youngsters and we, in exchange, introduce them to golf. All the youngsters we have received so far had never played golf in their entire lives; there they would have the opportunity to have this experience.”
What is a plus in Salies is that the golf course is open for these initiations. Young people don’t just hit balls on the driving range. We can take them on the field, we offer them a small challenge: to make shots between 60 and 80 meters, for example in teams. For this fencing golf day, the uncertain weather meant that the fencers exchanged some passes under the shelter of the tent in the morning, but after the picnic, when the sun had appeared, it was on the golf course that everyone found each other.
