a Gaza solidarity camp set up on the campus of Northwestern University

AA / Chicago / Ayse Betul Akcesme

A solidarity camp was set up on Thursday morning on the campus of the prestigious American university “Northwestern University” in Chicago, as a sign of protest against the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Students from Northwestern University thus joined the demonstrations that broke out at American universities, such as Columbia University, to call for a ceasefire in Gaza.

They demand “demarcation and separation from the war in Gaza and apartheid”, “termination of partnerships that legitimize the genocide in Gaza and the Israeli occupation”, “protection of civil liberties and safety of students”.

A significant presence of security forces was observed in the campus despite the peaceful climate prevailing there.

Students chanted in support of the Palestinians, walking around and chanting slogans like “Free Palestine” and “Truce now!”

Throughout the day, volunteers brought food and drinks to students mobilized for the Palestinian cause.

— Protests against the Gaza war are gaining momentum on American college campuses

The war declared by the Jewish state against Hamas has caused an estimated 112,000 casualties (dead and injured) among Palestinians as of October 7, 2023.

On April 18, pro-Palestinian students at Columbia University in the United States began a sit-in on the campus lawn demanding that the university’s administration end its relations with companies linked to Israel.

Police arrested at least 108 students from the prestigious New York University during these demonstrations of solidarity with Gaza.

Gradually, pro-Palestinian student protests spread to other major universities in the United States, including New York University, Yale University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of North Carolina.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been waging a devastating war in the Gaza Strip, which, in addition to starvation, has caused tens of thousands of civilian victims, mostly children and women, an unprecedented humanitarian disaster and massive destruction of infrastructure. which led to Tel Aviv appearing before the International Court of Justice for “genocide”.
