How to prescribe physical activity for health purposes?

To make it easier for adults to prescribe physical activity, the Higher Health Authority (HAS) provides doctors and patients with numerous tools, as well as a recorded webinar on the topic.

Why is it important?

There are many benefits of physical activity for health, fitness and independence. It is a stand-alone therapy, alone or in combination with drug treatment, in many situations: chronic diseases, risk factors and loss of autonomy. Despite these known benefits, many barriers remain on the part of healthcare providers and patients. That’s why HAS offers tools to assist physicians in counseling and prescribing, as well as patient information sheets.

What tools are available?

For doctors, HAS offers:

  • Guides: ” Consultation and medical prescription of physical activity for recreational purposes for adults “, ” A guide to knowledge about physical activity and sedentary behavior ” ;
  • General information sheet, common to all pathologies;
  • Sheets and certificates on pathology (for example: strokes, asthma, cancer, depression, etc.) and on the situation or health condition (for example: pregnancy, the elderly, etc.);
  • A decision tree covering all stages of the path to health, right down to physical activity.

For patients, HAS also offers general information sheets common to all pathologies, or specific sheets for a pathology or situation/health condition.
