The next HomePod will be much less innovative than we thought

Apple is reportedly working on a new HomePod in a new form factor… but one that’s far less innovative than previous rumors suggested. As it stands, this new model will have a design closer to that of a “simple” soundbar.

When it comes to connected speakers, Apple has so far been relatively cautious and not very bold. This situation will continue with the upcoming HomePod 3, which will end up being far less innovative than we’d like… at least if we go by the information and sketches spotted by Apple Insider.

In fact, we learn that the next body of the Cupertino giant will have shape factor relatively consistent, close to a “simple” soundbar. To recap, there were rumors last year that the company would focus on innovative design for its next-generation HomePod. In particular, we were talking about a product designed specifically for messaging via FaceTime and built on a 7-inch screen. A way to compete with Google Nest Hub or another Amazon Echo Show.

However, the sketches that have come down to us reveal a much more classic accessory. The idea of ​​a screen would still be relevant, but the screen would be minimalist, centrally located in the device, and dedicated to Siri. The speakers will be distributed on both sides of this screen.

The description that accompanies these sketches in the patent application (filed by Apple in 2022) otherwise evokes ” decorative design of audio speaker ” and a device designed to connect to various sources. The rear view also shows several connections similar to those found on many soundbars.

This change is important because until now there was nothing hardware connected to the HomePod or HomePod mini. At least except for the built-in power cord. So, in this case, Apple will be betting on a new HomePod that will be larger, potentially more powerful, and capable of connecting to a TV via wire, to offer audio quality that we believe is more comprehensive than what is offered in existing models.

In terms of design, this new HomePod will finally come closer to some of the speakers released in the past by Beats, which was owned by Apple for about 10 years. However, it should be noted that a patent application is in no way an indication that the described product will actually appear on the market. It’s possible that Apple is exploring different design options for its next HomePod model… and that the one we’re interested in today will end up abandoned or left aside.
