In the series “Ripley”, Andrew Scott puts himself in the shoes of a con man ready for anything – rts.ch

A new film adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel, Ripley, tells the story of a con man who discovers a world of luxury and privilege after accepting a job in Italy. But to be able to afford this life of his dreams, he will have to invent a series of lies. Watch it on Netflix since April 4.

Tom Ripley, a New York con man wreaking havoc in the early 1960s, is hired by a wealthy man who sends him to Italy to try to convince his bohemian son, Dickie, to come home. By accepting this mission, Tom enters a complex spiral that will lead him into lies, fraud, and murder.

A new series based on the five novels by American novelist Patricia Highsmith, who have previously received cinematic honors (from “Plain Soleil” with Alain Delon in 1960 to “The Talented Mr. Ripley” with Matt Damon in 1999), and the miniseries “Ripley”, written by Stephen Zaillian, consisting of eight black-and-white episodes, where every shot is a masterpiece, the aesthetic of the series is very well done and the reconstruction is of great beauty.

Lying, deceiving and killing

In this transfer, Italy almost plays the lead role, with its narrow streets, its endless stairs, and its language spoken by the actors half the time. We visited Atrani, San Remo, Palermo and even Venice alongside Tom Ripley played by Andrew Scott at his best. The actor easily puts himself in the shoes of the cold, calculating and anxious person who would rather pry than convince Dickie to return to the United States.

Lies, deception and murder are on the menu in this series of constant tension and suspense. If the somewhat slow pace may put off some, fans of film noir will delight in this Ripley film, as we feel homage to Hitchcock, both in the story and in the brilliant direction.
