Forced to take Ozempic due to sugary drink addiction, 13-year-old boy sends message to young people

A 13-year-old boy who developed diabetes due to an addiction to sugary drinks wants his experience to serve as a lesson for other young people who enjoy this type of drink.

Alexandre Lazur-Lagacé, who lives in Saint-Lin-Laurentide, was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a year ago. He weighed about 375 pounds at the time.

Health problems began early in a person who realizes that the cause of his problems is his poor lifestyle.

“Ever since I was a child, I have always eaten a lot. As a child, I always ate more than others. From the age of 9-10 I complained of pain in the heart, stomach and headaches. That’s why we started consulting,” says Alexander.

“When he was little, he ate almost the same as other children, but he was still overweight. He didn’t eat junk. He ate the same things (as others) both in kindergarten and at home, there was no junk food,” says his father, Francois Lagacé.

Fortunately, Ozempic injections have allowed him to control his insulin levels and lose more than 50 pounds over the past year.

However, Alexander hopes that his story will encourage other children and teenagers to reduce their consumption of sugary drinks.

“It’s really about limiting those drinks because I started quite early with juices, then soft drinks, some energy drinks. So, we really need to control it because at some point, if we drink too much, that’s what will happen,” he concludes.
