Öspek Wrika – “The Arab Future”: Diving into the counter-narratives of the Arab world

Equipped with accelerating technologies, burdened by urban gloom or amplified by avatars, the emerging future is decisively alternative, transcendent, and transformative. The themes of migration, colonialism, war, the unification of communities, and the destruction of life are intertwined in an aesthetics that combines the future, history, and Arab and Islamic traditions. These “new” imaginings are often unseen, even “invisible,” wrapped in the form of a comforting dream, a refreshing cynicism or a prophetic fatalism to tell stories where the border between nightmarish fantasy and reality is sometimes fine.

The destructive and prosperous future

As we delve deeper into the depths of IMA, the works break away from pop culture references and objects representing a semblance of shared imagination, towards hybrid, grotesque and sometimes demonic creatures. Once marginalized for their quirkiness, these characters question the normativity of our views and reshape humanity toward a future in which strangeness and harmony do not conflict.

Humanity is, after all, on its way out in favor of plants and fungi that grow and decompose the material and immaterial remains of our societies, and which the future will not know what to do with. Traditional ceramics, digital technologies and also the arrogance of the human race find themselves buried or left abandoned, as if waiting for the cycle of life to finally do its job.
