Parents are encouraged to learn more about HPV vaccination

As part of the HPV vaccination campaign, Professor Eustace Janki and Dr Anne-Claire Auror held an information morning for parents and Year 5 students in Le Abim.

Despite progress, vaccination coverage in Guadeloupe remains low. Hence this information morning, organized by the Regional Health Agency in the Joseph Theodore Faustin Hall in Bouaripo, in Le Abime, this Saturday, April 27th. To shed light on this vaccination, parents and 5th grade students were offered another method: meeting face-to-face with health care providers.

Thus, Professor Eustace Janki, professor of medicine in obstetrics and gynecology and head of the Center for Parents and Children of the Pointe-à-Pitre University Hospital, and Dr. Anne-Claire Auror, pathologist at the University Hospital, explained, informed and answered questions from the parents present at this first lesson.

With the clear goal of demystifying cancer associated with human papillomavirus infection.

Human papillomaviruses, also called HPV, are highly contagious viruses, affecting 80% of women and men during their lifetime. They are the most common cause of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). There are 6,000 cases reported annually in France.

A national vaccination campaign was launched last September and was offered to all Year 5 pupils.

In Guadeloupe, 31.5% of girls and 6.8% of boys aged 15 years have started the papillomavirus vaccination schedule, according to French Public Health.

In Martinique, the figures are 21.9% for girls and 6.3% for 15-year-old boys.

HPV vaccination coverage increased slightly in 2023, with a 5-point increase among girls in Guadeloupe and 4.3 points in Martinique, while coverage among boys more than doubled compared to 2022, although it remained below 7%.

In Guadeloupe, between the start and end of the first phase of the campaign, there was an increase in vaccination coverage of 8 points among girls and 5 points among boys, but at this stage it is not possible to indicate the achievements directly related to this campaign, clarifies. ARS.

The effectiveness of HPV vaccination is observed in countries where vaccination coverage is high.

Two more meetings are planned:

  • May 18 at the Gerard Lokel cultural center in Bellecourt in Baie-Mao.
  • May 25 at Aristide Girard School, Sergent-aux-Moules.
