Global geopolitical tensions have sparked a veritable arms race, marked by an unprecedented increase in military spending in 2023. According to the latest report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri), global military spending reached a record $2.443 billion, a significant increase of 6.8 % compared to the previous year.

This spectacular increase in military spending can largely be attributed to major world powers such as United States of America, China, Russia, India and Saudi Arabiawho continue to invest massively in their military apparatus.

In the Middle East region, arms spending has also seen strong growth, with countries such as Israel and Saudi Arabia significantly increasing their military budgets.

However, it is significant to note that Africa is also emerging as a major player in this growing military spending trend. Indeed, according to data from Siprithere Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) recorded the largest increase in military spending in the world in 2023.

Continued tensions with Rwanda led to this DRC to significantly increase its military spending, thus reaching the total 794 million euros, an impressive 105% year-over-year increase. This significant increase reflects the growing importance of security and defense for African countries facing regional and international challenges.

There DRC is not the only African nation to significantly strengthen its military capabilities in 2023 Sudanfaced with internal and regional security challenges, it also saw a significant increase in military spending, amounting to $1.1 billion, a 78% increase.
