Dengue: epidemic continues in Martinique despite downward trend

The Martinique Regional Health Agency (ARS) has noted an overall decline in monitoring of the dengue epidemic in Martinique. Vigilance remains necessary due to the continued circulation of the virus and the possibility of imminent increases in rainfall. ARS believes it is necessary to immediately strengthen measures to combat the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, both at an individual and at a collective level.

Although the past week (April 15 to 21) has seen an overall decline in dengue surveillance rates, vigilance is still required. The threat of increased circulation of the virus with the arrival of rains requires increased control measures against the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, both individually and collectively.

Continuous monitoring shows that dengue fever remains at a high level with about 200 clinical cases per week for the last four weeks (March 25 to April 21). The number of SOS-Médecins home visits for suspected dengue fever has decreased from 44 to 25 visits per week. Since the beginning of the epidemic, approximately 18,480 patients have visited public health centers for dengue syndrome and 3,845 have been examined by SOS-Médecins.

Hospitals have also seen a decline in dengue-related activity. Last week (April 15 to 21) there were 7 emergency department visits, one of which resulted in hospitalization, compared to 9 the previous week with four hospitalizations. Among the emergency department cases, three involved children under 15 years of age.

A total of 1,611 cases have required emergency care since the outbreak began on July 24, 2023, of which 375 (23%) resulted in hospitalization.

These declining numbers are not persistent enough to stop the epidemic. Vigilance is still in effect, dengue fever is deadly.
