Security Council calls for “de-escalation” in northern Sudan

The UN Security Council expressed concern on Saturday about rising tensions in Sudan’s North Darfur, calling on the conflicting parties to de-escalate the situation.

In a press statement, the UN executive body expressed its “deep concern at the imminent Rapid Support Force offensive” on the town of El Fasher, “which harbors hundreds of thousands of people who have fled violence elsewhere.”

The Council called on the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Force “to stop the build-up of military forces and take measures to de-escalate the situation and respect their obligations under international humanitarian law”.

He also renewed his call for an immediate cessation of hostilities, which would lead to a permanent ceasefire.

For his part, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres pointed out that this escalation of tensions is happening in a region that is already on the brink of famine, repeating his call to all parties to refrain from any fighting in this part of the country.

In a press release, he pointed out that the El Fasher region is a humanitarian platform of the United Nations “which ensures that vital aid is distributed to the five states of Darfur according to need”.
