A new live action film is in preparation a year after the success of “Middle Kingdom”

After the success of “Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom”, a new action film is now being prepared at StudioCanal.

StudioCanal, a subsidiary of Canal+, will produce a live-action film based on the filmAsterix “Launching in Style,” a new label dedicated to adapted literary works, was announced on Monday, April 29, by the head of the audiovisual group, Maxime Saadeh.

“In 2023, almost half of the successful films at the American and French box office were literary adaptations,” Maxime Saada explained to Vivendi shareholders (parent company of Canal +), gathered at a general meeting.

“That is why, inspired by the merger of Vivendi and the Lagardère Group”, which includes Hachette Livre, the leading French publisher and number three in the world, “we decided to create a new brand in StudioCanal, StudioCanal Stories,” Maxime Saadeh continued.

New live action coming soon

This announcement comes after the establishment of a department dedicated to converting literary works into films and series in 2022, which is a “first” for a film studio, according to the director.

“Our first project, to inaugurate this new brand in style, will be the next adaptation of Hachette’s strongest franchise, in comics and in cinema, number one of all time in all categories, the most popular French character worldwide, AsterixHe added that his next film will be developed live-action by StudioCanal.

In 2023, Asterix and Obelix: Middle KingdomThe fifth live-action film based on the adventures of the fanatical Gauls of Goscinny and Uderzo, produced by Pathé and directed by Guillaume Canet, gathered 4.6 million spectators in French cinemas, and is the biggest success of French cinema this year.

Independently of the Canal+ project, an animated series based on the album Boss battleDirected by Alain Chabat, it is also expected to premiere on Netflix next year.
