Ubuntu 24.04 LTS brings the latest Linux 6.8 kernel with improved system call performance, support for nested KVM on ppc64el, and access to the new bcachefs file system.

Ubuntu Desktop 24.04 LTS provides GNOME 46 environment. This release brings many performance and usability improvements, including search and file manager performance, expandable notifications, and consolidated settings options.

THAT new Application Center (powered by Flutter) – Another major new feature: new look, improved performance, easier to find apps with clearer categories and app management features.

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS enables frame pointers by default on all 64-bit architectures. Canonical and Intel jointly introduced Intel QuickAssist Technology (Intel QAT) in an LTS release. This allows users to accelerate encryption and compression to reduce CPU load and improve performance for networking and storage applications on 4th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors and other new models.

For developers

Developers can expect the latest toolsets: Python 3.12, Ruby 3.2, PHP 8.3 and Go 1.22, with a focus on developer capabilities for .NET, Java and Rust. At this level, the introduction of .NET 8 allows Ubuntu to take a step forward in supporting the .NET community. .NET support has also been extended to the IBM System Z platform.

For Java developers, OpenJDK 21 is the default version in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, while maintaining support for versions 17, 11 and 8. OpenJDK 17 and 21 are also TCK certified. A special FIPS-compliant OpenJDK 11 package is also available for Ubuntu Pro users.

For the first time in LTS, Ubuntu Desktop now uses the same installation technology as Ubuntu Server. Administrators can now use image customization tools such as automatic installation AND cloud provisioning. The user interface has also been updated and now features a modern Flutter design.

For those managing mixed Windows and Ubuntu environments, the Active Directory Group Policy client, available through Ubuntu Pro, now supports enterprise proxy configuration, privilege management, and remote script execution.

Canonical continues to invest in Ubuntu on the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) as a platform for developers. As of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, Ubuntu on WSL now supports cloud provisioning to ensure customization and standardization of images across development parks.
