Everything you need to know about UEK-next, the Oracle Linux primary testing kernel

The Oracle Linux team is announcing a new solution that allows you to take advantage of the latest developments in the Linux kernel and experience them with a kernel entirely developed by Oracle. This is UEK-next.

What are we talking about ? UEK-next versions: Linux kernels upstream including Oracle Linux Fixes.

What interest?

They should allowevaluate the new features of Linux upstream to experiment with the latest hardware support and test application compatibility with the latest kernels.

UEC-next no not supported for production use, but in the form of limited testing and development support for validating applications and workloads. uek-next sources can be found on Github.

History of the creation of UEC-next

Oracle has developed a system called Linux Upstream Continuous Integration (LUCI) for managing Linux kernel patches. All patches integrated into the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK) by Oracle must be added to the LUCI system, continuously integrated, and verified against the latest versions of the original Linux kernel.

LUCI serves as an early warning system for conflicts between these patches and the original Linux kernel, and encourages developers to focus on core kernel development in addition to client- or product-specific development they may be working on.

UEC roadmap is next

The publishing house plans release a new version of UEC – the next few weeks after the release of each new kernel source code, binaries and public git repositories.

Starting with Linux kernel 6.8, Oracle will release UEK is next on the channel yum for developers to allow developers and end users to easily experiment with the latest Linux kernels on Oracle Linux 9.

You will find UEK-next in the Oracle Linux 9 yum repositories. You can also use a virtual machine environment using Oracle Linux VirtualBox images or a virtual machine with UTM or QEMU.
