According to a recent survey by the Paris Region Institute, the bicycle is more popular than the car in Paris and its inner cities. The survey, conducted between October 2022 and April 2023 among 3,337 residents of Ile-de-France aged between 16 and 80, shows that on average 11% of journeys within Paris on working days were made by bicycle, compared to only 4% by bicycle. the car. The bicycle also came first when traveling between Paris and the city centres: 14%, compared to 12% for the car.

As the research shows, car use increases as the distance from Paris increases: 17% of trips between Paris and the suburbs were made by car (compared to 77% by public transport), but the car was used for 61 % of trips within the suburbs. four departments that form the larger suburbs, which are less accessible by public transport.

Within Paris, walking remains the most used means of transport, accounting for 53% of trips in the city. Next came public transport (30%). The Paris Region Institute also indicates that the main reason for travel among Parisians and residents of Ile-de-France remains work: on average, about 34.5 million trips take place on weekdays, 29 million on Saturdays and 19 million on Sundays.
