Madagascar launches vaccination catch-up campaign

Madagascar officially launched its vaccination catch-up campaign on Friday. 900,000 children in the country will be affected. At the same time, the country is developing capacity to store vaccine doses.

This Friday, April 26, the vaccination campaign officially started in Madagascar. It will last a year with the goal of vaccinating almost 900,000 children. During the launch of the operation, the first lady and godmother of the project took the opportunity to reach out to religious leaders, schools and even medical professionals to raise awareness among parents about the issue. Agents will also travel to areas far from health centers to identify and compile a list of unvaccinated children.

Overall, the government is seeking to strengthen its capabilities in this area. A new vaccine storage center was opened on Thursday in Antananarivo by the World Health Organization’s regional director, WHO. The President also announced that by the end of the year, all vaccine storage centers will be equipped with solar refrigerators to better preserve doses. The country has fallen behind: more than one million two hundred thousand Malagasy children under five have not received a single dose of vaccine this year.
