Heroines from the Antilles and Guyana at the Gazelles rally

They dreamed about it. They did it. Alexia and Laetitia for Guyana, Sarah and Marie-Laure for Guadeloupe have just completed the famous Aïcha des Gazelles rally. 15 days of orientation in the Moroccan desert. A look back at this unforgettable adventure

It was on the beach of Essaouira in Morocco that the arrival of the 33rd Gazelles rally took place. 200 cars, 400 candidates, some of them came from afar. In a buggy, Sarah and Marie-Laure are proud to represent Guadeloupe. Alexia and Laetitia traveled from Guyana.

Courage was needed to face the Moroccan desert, a challenge that tested their strategy and strength to find the best course via old-fashioned off-road navigation, using a map, compass and ruler.

It’s outdoing yourself, going to the end, we put in 15-hour days, we didn’t give up. We met quite a few fringes, we turned around, we got hung up on acacia trees, but every time we went!

Every day, the “Gazelles” must reach as many markers as possible while covering as few kilometers as possible with events where fatigue is often felt.

Our goal was already to go to the end, to hold on, to have the mental strength to hold on, the form as well, not to destroy the car as well!

Laetitia Mirabel, crew in Guyana

We drove places… I didn’t think a car could drive it…

Alexia Vanderberq, crew in Guyana

Solidarity played a full role in this 100% female race. The gazelles in Guadeloupe and Guyana rose to the challenge and, above all, found new friendships.

A report from Nathalie Sarfati and Nordine Bensmail.
