App Store and Google Play Store remove applications for creating “nude” using AI

To stop the growing controversy over apps that promise to “nude” people in photos, Google and Apple have removed several of them.

Artificial intelligence and its extremes may have limits. Google and Apple at their level decided to put an end to this by controlling their app store. According to an investigation by the website 400 Media, discovered by Journal du Geek, the two giants have removed apps that promise to create “nudes” using artificial intelligence.

This type of application has been highlighted in the media, allowing people to “undress” people from photographs, or “undress them” by pasting their face onto another body using AI. 400 Media also noted extensive advertising on Instagram and adult websites. Other advertisements have also been spotted on X (formerly Twitter).

A recurring problem since 2022.

Warnings were sent to Apple and Google developers before sanctions were issued for violating Store policies. And thus, the question of video or photo “deepfakes” created by AI is once again brought up for discussion, creating “serious ethical and legal” problems.

Several US states have begun passing laws to address sexually explicit content generated by AI and the psychological or other harm caused to victims. Several elected officials have called on platforms to also take note of the problem and intervene.

Since 2022, these types of apps have been around and reported on the Google Play Store and App Store, but with no response from the industry giants. According to media reports, Apple removed three apps after they were exposed in articles. The investigative report also mentions five advertisements for this type of application found in the Meta advertising library (two for web services offering such capabilities, three for applications from the App Store). Meta quickly removed the offending ad.
