Boston Dynamics has developed a suit called Sparkles to dress its robot dog. The company unveiled it in a new video in which Spot, a robot wearing the costume, dances next to another.

Spot, the robot dog from Boston Dynamics, isn’t so creepy anymore. Usually causes fear, especially because of an episode of a TV series. Black mirror in which the heroine is pursued by robots that look like her, Spot shows herself in a new light in the company’s latest video.

Published on Monday, April 29, to mark International Dance Day, it shows a robot dog dressed in a blue and white dog costume dancing next to another spot. Called Sparkles, the custom suit was “designed specifically for Spot to allow him to explore the intersection between robotics, art and entertainment,” Boston Dynamics explained.

Choreographer, Dance Instrument at Boston Dynamics

This costume makes the company’s famous robot dog seem more real and, above all, more adorable, although that’s not Boston Dynamics’ goal in this video. With this, the company first of all wants to show how it managed to make him dance.

Boston Dynamics has already choreographed its robots, including Spot and Atlas. Her robot dogs can dance thanks to a tool called Choreographer, which is “designed to bridge the gap between the creative process of a traditional choreographer and the technical process of programming a robot,” she explained on her blog.

Specifically, it “allows non-technical users to create dances like a choreographer instructing a dancer rather than an engineer programming a robot,” Boston Dynamics added.

The company introduced this tool in June 2021, when the Hyundai automobile concern became its majority shareholder. To mark the occasion, the company released a video of Spot dancing with BTS.
