World Malaria Day: United States and DRC work together to promote healthy communities

April 25, 2024

Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) – Since November 2010, the United States has worked with the Government of the DRC to protect the Congolese population from malaria and improve public health. Over the past 14 years, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has provided approximately $650 million through the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI). Investing in malaria testing, medicines and prevention options such as insecticide-treated bed nets saves lives and protects those most at risk from the disease, say pregnant women and children.

Thanks to the generosity of the American people, more than 45 million people in the DRC receive life-saving care each year to prevent or treat malaria. Last year, PMI provided three million mosquito nets, five million doses to prevent malaria during pregnancy, 12 million rapid diagnostic tests, one million doses for rapid treatment of malaria and more than two million doses of drugs for severe cases of malaria. USAID also trained more than 360 health workers and 1,300 community health workers in malaria detection and treatment to improve local knowledge and skills to provide life-saving care in their communities.

On the occasion of World Malaria Day in Muanda, Central Congo, DRC, USAID Mission Director John Dunlop emphasized the importance of cooperation between the United States and the DRC: “The DRC is the key to a malaria-free generation: the world cannot get rid of malaria without the DRC’s help . The United States will continue to support you in these efforts, as it has done for the past 14 years.”

David Walton, PMI US Global Coordinator, said: “I applaud the energy, dedication and ingenuity of those working on the front lines protecting their communities from malaria. The United States is committed to working hand in hand with the people of the DRC to realize our shared vision of a malaria-free future.”

About PMI: The U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) supports 27 partner countries in sub-Saharan Africa and three programs in the Greater Mekong Subregion of Southeast Asia to control and eliminate malaria. PMI, led by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented in collaboration with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), provides effective, low-cost, and life-saving interventions against malaria, such as insecticide bed treatment. nets, indoor insecticide spraying and essential medicines – and is investing in health workers and health systems to accelerate the fight against this deadly disease on a global scale.
