Spain canceled an annual bullfighting competition on Friday

The Ministry of Culture said it made its decision to cancel the award due to “the new social and cultural context in Spain,” with growing concerns about the treatment of animals, while attendance at bullfighting arenas is declining in most regions, according to Reuters.

Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun announced on the “X” platform: “The majority of Spaniards feel a lack of understanding about the reasons for the practice of torturing animals in the country… not to mention the public financing of this torture.” »

The national award was in the form of a government grant worth 30,000 euros ($32,217) and was awarded to famous bullfighters such as Julian Lopez, known as “El Jolie,” or to cultural associations linked to the traditions of bullfighting.
