TRUTH OR LIE. Is aspartame, this sugar substitute, good or bad for your health?

The most important
Aspartame has low calories and 150 times the sweetening power of sugar and is the subject of controversy. Explanations.

It’s found in carbonated drinks, desserts and even medicines… Aspartame is “possibly carcinogenic to humans.” This conclusion was reached in 2023 by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). A more than vague conclusion that raises questions among consumers.

Up to nine cans a day

“We are not advising companies to stop consuming their products and we are not advising consumers to stop consuming them completely,” said Dr Branca, director of WHO’s Department of Nutrition, Health and Development. IARC, for its part, states that it has a “limited indication” for the treatment of cancer in humans, in particular hepatocellular carcinoma, which affects the liver.

The WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives concluded that there is no need to reduce the daily dose of 40 mg/kg, which has been in effect since 1981. For example, a 70kg adult would need to consume nine to fourteen cans sweetened with aspartame (200-300mg) to exceed the dose.

Sweeteners identified by WHO

However, in 2023, the WHO published a report warning consumers about artificial sweeteners, including aspartame, stating that “their use [conférait] no benefit in reducing body fat.” However, according to WHO, they increase the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Moreover, Italian and Danish studies mutually suggest a risk of liver or lung cancer in animals, as well as an association between aspartame consumption during pregnancy and the risk of preterm birth. Please note that both decisions have been challenged by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). When in doubt, it is still better to give preference to unprocessed foods, that is, water, fruits and vegetables.
