Review of Dalia de la Cerda’s book “Guard Dogs”, recommended by Neija Sinno, author of the Femina 2023 Award. On the menu: Mexico, drug trafficking, chic, sorority and dark humor.

“Did you know that in Mexico seven women are killed every day?, asks the main character of “Dogs on Guard”. femicide every three hours twenty-fivewith almost complete impunity – 98% of those convicted in court remain unpunished.

In her first book, Dalia de la Cerda, a Mexican activist and journalist, takes the reader on a journey. a labyrinth of thirteen stories written in the first person and with different narrative styles. Each story shows the point of view of a woman, sometimes the daughter of a deputy, a drug dealer, or driven to poverty and the harshness of the streetwith his own way of expressing himself, with the result playing with the registers of spoken language.

Return of violence

These pieces of life sometimes intersect, and always condemn tragic situations. “Mexico is a huge monster that eats women.” So, heroines relearn these violence and codes of domination to survive.

It’s hard to believe everything we read. “In your home, in your neighborhood, full of greenery and well-paved streets, this never happens, but in fact it happens every day, even if you fools don’t want to believe it.”
