A mixed first day for Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates). The Slovenian, double winner of the Tour de France, took his first pedal strokes at the Giro on Saturday during the first stage. On the attack on the final difficulty, he scraped a few seconds off his supposed opponents overall.

But once is not usual, he came across someone stronger than him in Turin, beaten in the sprint by the Ecuadorian, Jhonatan Narvaez (INEOS Grenadiers) and the German Maximillian Schachmann (Bora-hansgrohe). A slight disappointment for Pogacar, who had made his teammates work during the day to try and pull on the pink tunic, from day one.
We tried to control but unfortunately it was not our day. On the last climb I had to accelerate with my foot on top because the group in front had too much of a lead. I tried, I gave it my all

The Slovenian, the winner of Liège-Bastogne-Liège, understood that he would have a hard time beating Jhonatan Narváez, who did not leave the rear wheel all day or almost. At the top I knew Narváez would be hard to beat in the sprint
admitted Pogagar.

The leader of UAE Team Emirates will have the opportunity to catch up during the 2e stage, this Sunday May 5, with a first arrival at the summit at the Oropa Shrine (11.8 km at 6.2%).
