Tech and gaming news will become much more active in May and June. We anticipate several events that could disrupt the devices we use every day.
Each year, May and June provide the opportunity for several brands to unveil important updates to our software, as well as new devices coming between now and the start of the school year. This is a pivotal time for technology and video games, and 2024 will see more of that happening than in previous years. After all, this year, each giant, it seems, planned more than others to amaze us with their latest innovations. Here’s a look at the weeks ahead. You’ll see, there’s a lot to enjoy. Enough to try to make technophiles and gamers forget about the latest disappointments in the sector, as well as the waves of layoffs that have marked the news in recent months.
Apple opens the holiday
To everyone’s surprise, since the event was announced at the last minute, Apple will be the first to launch on May 7th. The conference is set to focus on the iPad, but could also allow the firm to launch an offensive into artificial intelligence.
After disappointing financial results, Apple must convince its fans and investors that the brand still has something to innovate and set trends.
Eco-friendly Pixel 8a and Google artificial intelligence
Just a week after the Apple conference, Google will meet us at its annual Google I/O conference on May 14th. This year, the firm should review all of its services and offer new features related to Gemini’s generative artificial intelligence.
We are especially looking forward to the presentation after numerous Google Pixel 8a leaks. This should be the first mid-range smartphone to promise such durability with at least 7 years of updates.
Also during this conference, Google should finally lift the veil on its response to Apple’s Vision Pro with Samsung. Both partners should prepare a mixed reality headset associated with the new version of Android, designed for this ecosystem. The firm must act quickly because Meta just pulled the rug out from under its feet by opening up Horizon OS to other brands.
Surface, Windows, and the AI PC Era
Not one, but two conferences. This is Microsoft’s program for the week of May 20th. After launching Surface for business in March, the company is set to introduce a new Surface line to the general public. The new machines will feature an Oled display, a first for this family of machines, and ARM chips developed jointly with Qualcomm. The event should also be an opportunity for Microsoft to unveil the future of Windows, focusing on artificial intelligence and new optimizations for ARM chips. Other manufacturers such as Asus are also scheduled to announce their new PCs on May 20th.
Next up on May 21 is Microsoft’s Build conference, where the company is slated to unveil new AI-focused services and explain to developers how they can use these new tools for their apps.
Huge mass of computers
May will end in Taiwan, where major IT brands have prepared many announcements for us. During Computex, which is held every year around this time, manufacturers are expected to introduce new cutting-edge machines that will make us dream, as well as much more affordable machines in which innovation can spread throughout the world.
Qualcomm is due to host a conference there to further discuss its full arrival in the Windows world, but we’ll also have an AMD and Nvidia conference where we can try it out. We believe Intel will not be left behind. Apart from artificial intelligence, we can also expect new features for video game lovers with the new generation of specialized machines.
Non-E3 is still there
E3 no longer exists. It was the US video game trade show and one of the biggest fan events of the year. If the event itself has disappeared, then the period of early June is still favorable for announcements. This year, Xbox has agreed to meet us on June 9th for a giant conference where Xbox Game Studios, as well as Bethesda and Activision Blizzard, will be in the spotlight. The giant now unites many studios around the world and must demonstrate its strength. This will also be an opportunity for Microsoft to introduce a new controller and possibly a new console.
At the same time, Ubisoft will host the Forward conference on June 10, and Geoff Keighley will present Summer Game Fest on June 7. Other events should also be added, such as the PC Gaming Show.
Apple again
We end this review where we started, Apple. The apple brand will hold its regular WWDC on June 10, 2024, live from Cupertino. This year is special again as we await the unveiling of iOS 18, which is seen as a major overhaul of the iPhone software. The brand should once again reaffirm its new commitment to artificial intelligence, tell us about Vision Pro and announce changes to WatchOS and macOS.
