Google Maps offers a cleaner and more practical interface.

Google continues to modernize the Maps interface. The mapping and navigation app is entitled to a few small but welcome improvements, particularly in terms of route finding for more streamlined rendering.

For many of us, Google Maps has become a faithful companion not only when traveling, but also in everyday life. Whether you need to get to a meeting, check travel times, or just find a nice restaurant to grab lunch, Mountain View’s mapping service is always there to help. Additionally, small changes often have a big impact on users. Google has recently made efforts to overhaul its interface, including adding new colors to its maps—which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea—adding 3D views during navigation, and improving system recommendations (see our article). But other changes are coming, including in terms of route search, as 9to5google notes, although not the most obvious ones. Modifications that were already tested in February last year – but clearly did not achieve the expected success – and which are still being improved.

New Google Maps interface: easier and more intuitive

First, if you tap anywhere, a new card will appear with Close and Share buttons in the top right corner—a minor addition that can go almost unnoticed. Its edges are more rounded, with a slight overlay effect, and the map remains visible in the background. So location files are no longer shown in full screen mode, which definitely enhances that “file” aspect, making navigation more enjoyable and intuitive. Additionally, these windows are easier to close thanks to the X button on the right.

The biggest change to Google Maps is in getting directions. The interface for entering departure and arrival addresses no longer takes up the entire top of the screen, but is instead an overlaid pop-up window with rounded edges. Here again it makes rendering easier and strengthens the mapping part of the application. As for the carousel showing different modes of transport (car, public transport, walking, bicycle, etc.), it no longer takes up the entire screen, but takes the form of an overlaid sheet that unfolds upward.

All these changes bring a touch of modernity and make navigation a little easier. For now, only a limited number of people can take advantage of this feature in version 11.127.x of the Android app. So you will have to be patient before you can take advantage of it.
