A new technique for installing an implantable port improves the quality of life of cancer patients.

At the Hôpitaux du Léman hospital in the capital Chablais, the medical team is proposing the installation of an implantable port under the armpit to improve the quality of life of patients suffering from cancer.

Lehman Hospitals are improving the quality of life of cancer patients by offering implantable port placement under the arm.

This position, more discreet and aesthetic than its classic placement in the chest, limits stigma and makes the catheter, implantable camera, and scar less noticeable. In addition, it makes daily life easier for patients by making any physical activity possible and avoiding discomfort caused by seat belts, bra straps or backpack straps.

The risk of serious complications, such as pulmonary perforation and air embolism, is also reduced. Only a hematoma on the arm is possible in 30% of cases.

Cancer treatment with chemotherapy requires very regular injections or intravenous punctures. To improve patient comfort and preserve their venous capital, Lehman hospitals have created a special care sector. Dr Pascal Fangio, anesthesiologist and intensivist at Hopito du Lémans Hospital, worked with his team to structure the patient journey to ensure quick appointments and personalized support. The installation request can be made either by hospital services or by external doctors (general practitioners, public or private medical or medical-social institutions). Care is provided on an outpatient basis, and patients return home the same day. The installation is carried out in the operating room in a specialized ward under local anesthesia without the need for fasting, in 45 minutes.
