iPhone: New feature makes sending it in for repair easier and safer

iOS updates often mark the introduction of convenience features. This time, iOS 17.5 will offer a brand new feature that will help protect your iPhone when it’s sent in for repair. A way to encourage owners to use this service instead of buying a new device.

Each new version of iOS comes with its own new features. After iOS 17 Wake Mode, a new feature in iOS 17.5 will keep your smartphone safe when sending it in for repair. Nowadays, many users are tempted to turn on the Find My feature before sending to ensure that the iPhone will not be lost or stolen. However, to repair the device, this option must be disabled. As a result, his trail is lost on the way back. Now this disadvantage will disappear.

How will this new option work?

In iOS 17.5, Apple has come up with a new option for this specific case called “Repair Preparation.” The function is almost equivalent to Find, with some differences. Firstly, it will no longer be deactivated during an iPhone repair: so it can be found until it gets home. You’ll then need to enter your Apple ID to activate or deactivate the feature, allowing the repair technician to verify that you are the owner of the iPhone. Finally, this feature will initially be exclusive to the iPhone anyway: unlike Find My Location, it will not be available on other devices from the bitten Apple brand (Apple Watch, AirPods, iPad, etc.).

When will “Get Ready to Renovate” be available?

The “Prepare for Repair” feature will be available simultaneously with update 17.5. The latter should arrive on our iPhones in May. This option will complement another one introduced in version 17.3 – a security feature called Device Theft Protection. This requires anyone holding an iPhone to authenticate via Face ID in addition to a security code for certain specific actions chosen by the user.

In addition to this, for actions considered “sensitive”, such as changing your password, you must wait a security period of one hour between two Face ID authentications to be able to perform said action. However, this functionality of iOS 17.3, although very secure, is deactivated when the phone requires repair. This will no longer happen with Preparing to Renovate.

How to activate “Device Theft Protection”?

Owners of an iPhone compatible with iOS 17 will first need to go to Settings to activate the Device Theft Protection feature. Then go to the “Face ID and code” section: you will be asked to enter your password. Once this is done, below you will find “Device Theft Protection”, you will need to click on it and activate the feature.
