MLB Recap for May 6, 2024: Harper and Wheeler lecture a rookie

The Philadelphia Phillies swept their four-game series against the San Francisco Giants with a 6-1 victory on Monday.

Bryce Harper hit a three-run homer to spoil the major league debut of rookie Mason Black, a right-hander who pitched into the fifth inning for his boys team.

“I hope he enjoyed the moment with his family, his teammates and everybody, because it only happens once,” Harper still wished.

Zack Wheeler struck out 11 batters in seven innings for Philly, which has won six straight and 10 of its last 11. The team is three games ahead of Atlanta atop the National East Division.

The Phillies also triumphed for the 10th time in a row at Citizens Bank Park, two points away from tying the organizational record set in 2012. They, meanwhile, have achieved a new mark of 11 straight victories against opponents from the West of the National.

“I feel like we find a way to win in different ways every night. There’s always a new player coming up, whether it’s a hitter, a pitcher… It’s nice to see,” catcher JT Realmuto said. “There is no pressure on any player, we all play very well together and we have a lot of fun. »

Harper’s second homer in two games, and his eighth overall, made it 4-0 in the fifth inning against Black, who is ranked as the seventh-best prospect in the league according to MLB.com. The latter had pulled Harper and Realmuto in the first inning, but ultimately allowed five runs on eight hits in addition to three walks in a four-and-one third inning.

Wheeler (4-3) showed the rookie how it works, allowing just one run and one walk to lower his ERA to 1.64. He bounced back from three losses to start the season.

Kyle Schwarber added a solo shot in the eighth inning in the win
