There are four categories of sleepers, and you better know which one is yours.

Do you have recurring insomnia? Sleeping too long? Are you waiting for the weekend to relax? The bad news: You’re one of those who can foresee a decline in your long-term health.

A recent study published by scientists from the University of Pennsylvania analyzes the impact of sleep on our health. After studying more than 3,000 adults over ten years, they were able to identify four different types of sleepers:

“Good sleepers,” in other words, good sleepers are those who have good sleep habits. “The Weekend Catch-up Sleepers”, which can be translated as “sleeping on weekends”. They sleep irregularly, have short nights, and wait for rest days to make up for lost sleep. Nappers are those who sleep well but nap often, even too often. Finally, “sleeping insomniacs” are those who get little sleep, get tired during the day, and have difficulty falling asleep in the evening.

According to this study, irregular sleep leads to an increased risk of developing health problems such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes or even depression. “sleepers with insomnia” being the most exposed.

Also watch out for excessive sleeping, which seems to be a good solution to bad nights: sleeping longer remains a sign of restless nights and can mean sleep problems in the long term.

“These results show that it is very difficult to change our sleep habits, they are an integral part of our overall lifestyle. This may also indicate that people are not always aware of the importance of sleep and sleep-related behaviours.– one of the researchers, Sumi Li, says in detail.

People with unstable situations and women are more likely to have sleep disorders

Some people are more likely to develop sleep disorders than others. Thus, the job insecurity reported in the study represents an additional risk factor for insomnia. And the likelihood of sleep disorders increases by about 47% among people whose work is considered unstable.

Women are also more prone to this. According to the French Ministry of Health, they are more vulnerable not for biological reasons, but because they “take on a social role that may affect their quality of life, especially in terms of mental suffering.”

Remember that sleep is essential for good mental health. As researcher Sumi Lee explains, this “gives the brain a chance to recover and helps it get rid of a lot of things.”
