“Abou Youssef al-Najjar hospital in Rafah is now at a standstill”

AA / Geneva / Muhammet İkbal Arslan

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization, announced on Wednesday that the Abu Youssef al-Najjar hospital in the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah was no longer able to provide services, following Israel’s ground attack.

This stems from a post published on his account about his surroundings and the Israeli military operation in Rafah.

“The closure of the border post hampers the operation of the United Nations and paralyzes the delivery of fuel.” Without fuel, all humanitarian actions will be interrupted – he regretted.

He added: “Hospitals in the southern Gaza Strip only have three days of fuel left, which means services could soon cease to function.”

“At a time when humanitarian operations, which are already fragile, must be intensified, the military operation in Rafah further limits our ability to reach thousands of people who live in catastrophic conditions, without food, without sanitation facilities, without health services and without adequate security “, “, warned the head of the WHO.

Ghebreyesus called for an immediate end to what is happening in Gaza.

The Israeli army launched a ‘limited-scale’ military operation on Tuesday morning, taking operational control of a border crossing with Egypt on the Palestinian side and closing two main access points for humanitarian aid.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has waged a deadly offensive on Gaza that has left an estimated 113,000 dead and wounded, most of them women and children, with 10,000 missing, against a background of mass destruction and famine that has already claimed the lives of children and the elderly.

Israel continues the war despite the adoption of a UN Security Council resolution prescribing an immediate ceasefire and despite the appearance of the Jewish state before the International Court of Justice, which demanded that it take immediate measures to prevent acts of genocide and improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
