In France, the imam complained about his deportation to Algeria

An imam from Toulouse, in southwestern France, exiled to Algeria in April for making anti-Jewish remarks in a sermon, has appealed his expulsion to the Council of State, his lawyers told AFP.

Sentenced in 2022 to four months of probation for this sermon, the imam of the Grand Mosque in Toulouse, Mohamad Tataïat, was arrested at his home on April 19, with the approval of a liberties and detention judge, and then deported.

The first appeal by his lawyers, which condemned the expeditious expulsion and did not take into account his exemplary behavior after the criticized sermon, held in 2017, was rejected by the Paris administrative court four days later.

In its order, the court considered “that his remarks represented an explicit and intentional provocation of discrimination, hatred and violence against a group of people – in this case, Jews – and that they brought a special resonance and gravity from the attack. of October 7, 2023, carried out by Hamas against Israel. However, his lawyer Vincent Brengarth underlined on Tuesday, “the expulsion committee gave a negative opinion on his expulsion and he was expelled suddenly without us being able to apply an effective legal remedy”. “We expect the State Council to sanction these illegalities and the attack on our client’s private life,” he added to AFP, noting that his client “was able to continue preaching from the acts for which he was convicted.”

Gérald Darmanin, who signed the expulsion order, was satisfied with justice.” Coming to France in 1985, Mohamed Tataïat moved to Toulouse two years later to work in a mosque in the Empalot district.
