NASA takes us into the heart of a supermassive black hole

To mark black hole week, NASA posted a video simulation online showing what traveling to a black hole looks like.

The viewer is then plunged into this hole in the middle of space, surrounded by a crown of fire: “disk of hot incandescent gas”– explains NASA.

The inner circle, quite thin, represents “ring of photons” (photons are particles of light energy), and around is our Milky Way.

A whirlwind worthy of science fiction

To illustrate its point, NASA shows a small camera rotating first around the black hole’s outer ring towards its center. The movement that will “so fast that the simulation slows down to see better” clarifies the federal agency.

The camera dive lasts ten minutes, creating an almost psychedelic vortex worthy of a sci-fi film. Eventually the light disappears and there is complete darkness. At the end of the simulation, the camera is destroyed. Amazing experience!
