Microsoft signs carbon removal deal with Brazilian reforestation company re.green

Microsoft has entered into an agreement with re.green, a Brazilian reforestation company. The deal is Microsoft’s second investment in carbon credits from Brazil in the past six months.

The agreement details Microsoft’s purchase of carbon removal credits over a 15-year period. Brazil’s vast degraded lands and tropical climate make it a suitable location for large-scale reforestation initiatives. Research shows that through reforestation and sustainable land management, Brazil can become a world leader in carbon sequestration.

Founded in 2022, re.green is a relatively new player in the reforestation sector. The company has ambitious plans to manage a piece of land for reforestation. re.green’s board of directors includes, among others, a former central bank president, and the company has received investment from a prominent Brazilian family.

On the other hand, some carbon credit projects have been investigated for alleged oppression of indigenous communities and failure to deliver promised benefits to local people.

The Re.green approach aims to plant native trees in previously deforested areas of the Amazon and Atlantic rainforests. Their strategy involves cutting down certain trees after 25 years and then planting permanent forests.

The agreement with Microsoft is a big step forward for re.green. The deal is likely to attract new investment and potentially open up debt financing opportunities, allowing the company to expand its forest restoration efforts.
